The Professional Development (PD) Manager directs all facets of attorney, paralegal, and professional staff (APP) professional development, including career development, case assignments, training, mentoring, evaluations and feedback. This role reports to the US Managing Partner.
The Manager will take a lead role in the development, evaluation, mentoring, training, engagement, and retention of APPs; continuously review and implement learning and development opportunities; implement best practices and respond quickly to issues affecting morale, productivity and retention. They will monitor external trends and best practices for professional development at all levels, including on career paths, staffing and deployment, mentoring, feedback, training, compensation, engagement, wellness and DEI; contribute to development and implementation at Hausfeld.
The Manager will collaborate with Case Assignment Partners and other partners to (a) ensure APPs are fully utilized and working efficiently; (b) allocate case and spot assignments to attorneys and paralegals, continually balancing business needs with individual needs/preferences; (c) identify appropriate workloads that incorporate attorney preferences where possible; (d) ensure consistency of experiences and equitable distribution of assignments across attorneys and paralegals; and (e) provide strategic advice regarding staffing, planning and resource management.
The Manager will develop and implement all aspects of APP training and development, including legal, practice management, business skills, and critical skills training, with reference to APP competency and development frameworks. In conjunction with Training Partner, take lead role in the advancement of in-house training, managing all facets of professional development initiatives from origin to execution; working with attorneys to enhance and curate relevant training content.
The Manager will coordinate biannual reviews of associates and staff attorneys and assist partners in communication to ensure that associates are provided with consistent feedback between cases. They will act as a trusted advisor to partners on performance evaluation issues, particularly relating to workflow, utilization, development, engagement, retention and promotion.
The Manager will manage mentoring programs; facilitate mentor-mentee pairings; recommend and implement new mentoring groups, program enhancements, discussion topics and trainings. They will assist with development and implementation of an onboarding program for new attorneys and oversee all aspects of the integration and onboarding process (after initial orientation) for APPs.
The ideal candidate must have 6 years of proven experience in professional development within a law firm setting, a bachelor’s degree (J.D. is strongly preferred), and have excellent interpersonal, analytical, written/oral communication and team skills; including excellent listening skills, combined with the ability to work effectively in fast-paced, consensus-driven, multi-authority and multi-office professional services partnership structure. They must experience in strategic planning leadership/management and financial analysis and reporting.
