Sathya S. Gosselin Awarded 2024 IMLA Amicus Service Award

Today, April 18, the International Municipal Lawyers Association (IMLA) will present Hausfeld Partner Sathya S. Gosselin with the organization’s distinguished Amicus Service Award for his support of the IMLA Legal Advocacy program in the District of Columbia v. Exxon Mobil Corp. case, which addressed the appropriate home for litigation brought by governmental entities asserting state-law violations related to environmental harms.

The Amicus Service Award seeks to recognize the lawyers who have been actively involved in legal advocacy for and on behalf of local governments and IMLA, and who have done exemplary work to protect and advance local government interests.

The amicus brief was written on behalf of the National League of Cities, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and IMLA in support of the District’s position in DC v. Exxon (D.C. Cir.). The amicus brief addressed the ability of state and local governments to litigate state-law environmental claims against polluters in state court, free of any supposed federal preemption under federal common law. The amicus brief was written with Robert S. Peck, President of the Center for Constitutional Litigation. The full brief can be accessed here.

Sathya will be recognized at the IMLA Mid-Year Seminar in Washington, D.C., during an amicus awards ceremony at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.
