ABA Panel Discussion 'NCAA v. Alston: The Decision'
On July 16, at 12pm EDT, Washington, DC Partner Sathya Gosselin joined sports law professors and government enforcers to discuss the Supreme Court's widely-anticipated decision in NCAA v. Alston. The panel examined the Court's opinion, emerging rules governing student athlete compensation, and the future of the NCAA.
In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court ruled on June 21, 2021 that the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s restrictions on compensation to college athletes in conjunction with educational expenses amount to an illegal price-fixing agreement in violation of the antitrust laws.
This historic decision is the culmination of 12 years of litigation first initiated by Hausfeld and college basketball luminary Ed O’Bannon in the 2009 O’Bannon v. NCAA case.
This is a tremendous victory for college athletes, who—as the Supreme Court recognizes—deserve to be treated fairly by the institutions earning billions of dollars from their labor.
