Farmed Salmon investigation
On 19 February 2019, the European Commission announced that it had carried out unannounced inspections at the premises of several companies in the sector of farmed Atlantic salmon. The Commission stated that it had concerns that the inspected companies may have engaged in anti-competitive practices.
Mainly Norwegian producers are reported to be targeted by the Commission, which sent out questionnaires in June 2020 to customers of those under investigation.
Actions for damages
Assuming that the Commission concludes its investigation into the cartel with a decision that there has been an infringement of competition law, it is well established that any person or business affected by the misconduct identified by the Commission may bring the matter before the courts of the member states and seek damages.
