The government drops its appeal over Net Zero Strategy

Our clients, Daze Aghaji and Peter Garforth, are pleased to see that the Government has dropped its appeal of Mr. Justice Holgate’s decision on date 18 July 2022 that the Net Zero Strategy was unlawful and has also conceded their judicial review claim.

Daze is a youth activist and campaigner who has experienced severe flooding and Peter lives on the fastest eroding coastline in Northern Europe – both are experiencing the physical and psychological impacts of climate change on a daily basis.

We note that the October 2022 Climate Change Committee Snapshot report confirms our clients’ position, stating again in clear terms that the UK is not on track for Net Zero by 2050. This report highlights a number of failings by the Government and will no doubt lead to more strategic litigation as civil society attempts to hold the Government to its stated aims. We look forward to the publication of updated Net Zero Strategy in eight months’ time.
