Luke Grimes’ practice focuses mainly on competition damages litigation, including collective proceedings in the Competition Appeal Tribunal. Luke joined Hausfeld in October 2017, having trained at Norton Rose Fulbright LLP. He was promoted to Senior Associate in January 2022.

Luke’s commitment to the advancement of global antitrust and competition law is demonstrated through his role as Assistant Managing Editor of Hausfeld’s Competition Bulletin. As the only Claimant-side antitrust publication dedicated to insights into noteworthy antitrust investigations, judgments, regulatory decisions, and competition law developments in the United States, the UK, and Europe, the Bulletin is widely recognised as market-leading by peers, clients, and the judiciary.

Expertise

At Hausfeld, Luke has been a pivotal part of the legal teams dealing with the most well-known competition damages actions in recent years.

At Hausfeld, Luke is part of the legal team acting for merchant retailers in the renowned ‘interchange fees’ litigation against Mastercard and Visa. Hausfeld acted on behalf of over 1000 operating entities in eight corporate groups, and continues to act for several merchant retailers.

Luke also plays a key role in the legal teams dealing with ground-breaking collective opt-out claims as follows:
- A collective action on behalf of the Consumers’ Association (known as Which?) against Qualcomm on behalf of a class of around 29 million UK consumers. The claim alleges that Qualcomm abused its dominance in the markets for smartphone chipsets and standard essential patents, the result of which is that Qualcomm is able to overcharge smartphone manufacturers like Apple and Samsung for its technology. Damages are estimated to be over £480 million.
- A proposed collective action for technology journalist, Charles Arthur, seeking up to £3.4bn on behalf of over 200,000 UK publishers of websites and apps against tech giant Google who allegedly has unlawfully restricted competition by favouring its own ad tech services and charging inflated prices in the online display advertising market to publishers since at least 2014.
Previous matters at Hausfeld include:
- Competition damages claims following on from the European Commission Decision in relation to the Power Cables cartel.
Luke played a key role as part of the legal team dealing with groundbreaking claims as follows:
- Instructed by Daze Aghaji and Peter Garforth, to hold the Government to account for its failures to adopt adequate policies to combat climate change through bringing a Judicial Review in relation to the Government's carbon budgets.
- Instructed by Save the Children in its intervention in Duarte Agostinho & 5 Others v Portugal & 32 Others before the European Court of Human Rights, highlighting the impact of climate change on children and on their right to safety/prosperous future.
