Climate litigation and energy

The ongoing climate crisis continues to gather pace worldwide, with many recent, high-profile legal cases placing the spotlight on the role of the law and Governments in tackling climate change. In July 2021, the London School of Economics (LSE) published the third report in its Global Trends in Climate Litigation series, summarising the trends originating from climate cases filed or concluded between May 2020 and May 2021, identifying the most common types of climate litigation.

Well timed to coincide with the COP26 summit which bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and following on from this key report, Committee Member of the London Solicitors Litigation Association and Hausfeld Partner John McElroy, offers his take on what the key cases and future trends in climate litigation tell us.
