OVERVIEW

James Gotz is co-chair of Hausfeld’s Public Entity and Environmental & Product Liability Practice Groups.  For more than 30 years, whether in his role as first-chair trial lawyer, client counselor or litigation manager, James has represented public entities and individual claimants throughout the country seeking justice through high-impact litigation.

James co-leads the firm’s deep-bench of attorneys representing public entities in environmental, consumer and affirmative firearm litigation.  Examples include:

  • The first-in-the-nation case seeking to hold chemical manufacturers responsible for contamination of one of the largest drinking water authority’s wells from decades-long release of 1,4-dioxane into groundwater, as well as the first state-wide case against those same companies;
  • Lawsuits on behalf of state Attorneys General to hold the oil industry accountable for their role in suppressing renewable energy technologies in violation of antitrust laws, and deceiving the public about the companies’ causative role in climate change; and
  • Lawsuits on behalf of cities and states to hold the firearm industry accountable for deceptive marketing, the proliferation of unlawful ghost guns and the industry’s failure to implement reasonable controls to reduce preventable gun violence.

James also contributes his complex litigation experience and best practice strategies to the firm’s human rights cases.  As an example, James counsels the Hausfeld team representing the largest class of victims in US human rights litigation history, to hold French bank BNP Paribas accountable for financially aiding and abetting the genocidal atrocities inflicted by the Government of South Sudan upon its citizens.

Earlier in his career, James was judicially appointed or invited to assume leadership roles in multiple drug and device MDLs, bringing his experience and skills to matters such as legal challenges to the admissibility of expert opinions (so-called Daubert challenges), litigation strategy and management as well as global resolution on behalf of tens of thousands of personal injury claimants. In addition, he has contributed to thought leadership on MDL-related issues through Emory Law School’s Institute for Complex Litigation and Mass Claims and advocated at hearings before the federal Advisory Committee on Evidence Rules concerning proposed changes to Rule 702 of the Federal Rules of Evidence.

In every case, James brings his considered and empathic approach to secure the greatest possible success for his clients while also preserving civility throughout the adversarial process.
