Hausfeld and Freedom Now file UN Petition on behalf of Kyrgyzstani activist
On May 4, 2026, Freedom Now and Hausfeld LLP filed a petition with the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention on behalf of Kyrgyzstani activist Tilekmat Kudaibergen uulu, alleging that his rendition from the United Arab Emirates to Kyrgyzstan and subsequent detention violate international human rights protections.
The petition argues that Mr. Kudaibergen uulu has been targeted in connection with his political and environmental activism, including criticism of government policy and participation in peaceful opposition movements. It further contends that his detention violates protections under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Mr. Kudaibergen uulu was arrested in the United Arab Emirates and rendered to Kyrgyzstan, where he now faces criminal charges focused on his exercise of his rights of free speech and of free association. His criminal trial began in February 2026 after an extended period of pre-trial detention.
“We are confident that the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention will call for his immediate release,” said Adam Lhedmat, Legal Officer at Freedom Now.
