James Cavanaugh

  • Senior Staff Attorney
  • Philadelphia

OVERVIEW

James Cavanaugh is a senior staff attorney in Hausfeld’s Philadelphia office. James is an experienced litigator, having previously established and managed his own general practice law firm. James’ practice focused on workers’ compensation, employment law, civil rights, and personal injury claims.

During his tenure in private practice, James advocated for establishing case law precedent in Dr. Joe John Doe v. TRIS Mental Health Services, 298 N.J. Super. 677 (1996), permitting disabled people, for the first time, to proceed anonymously in the New Jersey Superior Courts. During this time, James investigated the facts of a workplace explosion involving a faulty truck rim, coordinated physical evidence, had close consultation with a Drexel University engineering expert, and ultimately settled for the injured plaintiff.

James had an active pro bono practice, a notable representation of an amicus curiae, the National Association of Social Workers, opposing discriminatory policies in the widely followed James Dale v. Boy Scouts of America case.

In recognition of his commitment to justice and equality, James was appointed by the Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court to sit on the N.J. Supreme Court Task Force on Lesbian & Gay Issues, whose purpose was to examine discrimination in the courts and the legal profession and to adopt recommendations.
