Hausfeld & ClientEarth host the London launch of the Principles on Climate Obligations

Tonight Hausfeld, together with ClientEarth, is hosting the London launch of the Principles on Climate Obligations of Enterprises.

The Principles aim to discern the legal obligations of enterprises and major investors in the face of climate change and are a follow-up to the Oslo Principles launched at King’s College London in 2015. Drafted by the Expert Group on Climate Obligations of Enterprises, mostly comprising of distinguished judges and law professors, they have also been endorsed by 36 distinguished experts, among them retired and still active senior judges from five continents.

The Principles provide a concrete and workable legal formula for the responsibilities of enterprises and investors to tackle climate change, based on the Expert Group’s interpretation of the law as it stands or will likely develop. They aim to create a level playing field, although they take into account the differences between, for example, domestic and multinational enterprises. They emphasise the long-term perspective that should be taken by institutional investors, and the consequences such a perspective creates for investment decisions.

The Principles will be introduced by Justice Brian Preston, Prof. Dr. Jaap Spier and Prof. Dr. Philip Sutherland.
