How could you go to court for clean air?

This free event explored more about a new legal action that you could be part of.

Since 2010, air pollution has been at illegal levels across the UK – and people’s health is suffering as a result. Air pollution is associated with a huge range of health issues including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and respiratory infections. Despite this, the UK Government has persistently breached its duty to protect people from illegal air pollution.

Hausfeld and environmental charity, ClientEarth - which has already successfully taken the UK Government to court three times - are exploring a new legal case to seek compensation for people who have been suffering the real life impacts of illegally polluted air and push the government to act to better protect people.

During an online event on Monday 29 November expert speakers provided more information on this potential legal challenge, and how you might be able to take part.

Speakers included:

  • Katie Nield, Clean Air Lawyer at ClientEarth, will explain why this challenge is needed.
  • Dr Ian Mudway, Senior Lecturer in the School of Public Health at Imperial College London, will speak about the health impacts of air pollution.
  • Ruth Fitzharris, Parent Campaigner, will tell us about her lived experience of having an asthmatic son in London.
  • Wessen Jazrawi, Partner at Hausfeld, will outline the processes of the potential litigation.

This was followed by a question and answer session from the audience.
