Data security has become a crucial issue in today’s digital environment. Hausfeld’s attorneys have been pioneers in seeking compensation for victims of data breaches and privacy violations and have recovered over $1 billion for financial institutions and consumers in legal actions around the country against retailers and restaurant chains whose inadequate security measures led to the release of sensitive information.

For example, we served as one of the court-appointed Steering Committee Members in In re Target Corporation Customer Data Security Breach Litigation. After the court granted class certification to a nationwide class of financial institutions, we obtained a groundbreaking $60 million settlement that covered class members’ out-of-pocket costs sustained as a result of the breach. The settlement, the first of its kind, also required Target to implement numerous data security changes going forward. We also served as one of three Co-Lead Counsel in Greater Chautauqua Federal Credit Union v. Kmart Corp., (resulting in a $17.5 million settlement, and as Chair of the Executive Committee in In re The Home Depot, Inc. Customer Data Security Breach Litigation ($40 million settlement).
