Hausfeld shortlisted by the Financial Times North America Innovative Lawyers Awards 2019 in two major categories
We are proud to announce that Hausfeld has been shortlisted by The Financial Times’ Innovative Lawyers Awards 2019 in two categories: ‘Innovation in the rule of law and access to justice’ for its efforts to enable access to justice for Southern African gold miners suffering from occupational lung disease, and ‘Innovation in legal expertise: litigation and disputes,’ for its efforts litigating for affordable cancer medications on behalf of consumers.
In the category of ‘Innovation in the rule of law and access to justice,’ the publication has recognized the firm’s groundbreaking work fighting for the rights of Southern African gold miners against most of South Africa’s gold mining industry. In this case, years of litigation against the defendants resulted in a landmark settlement. The settlement calls for the compensation of all eligible gold miners who suffer from silicosis or tuberculosis, and sets up a trust to provide medical examinations of miners and compensation payments.
The firm was further recognized in the ‘Innovation in legal expertise: litigation and disputes’ category, for its work on In re Thalomid and Revlimid Antitrust Litigation, in which the firm represents a class of plaintiffs who allege that Celgene engaged in a multi-faceted scheme to maintain its monopoly and interfere with competitors’ efforts to enter the market with generic versions of Thalomid and Revlimid. Celgene has agreed to pay $55 million to settle these claims.
The winners will be announced at the Financial Times Innovative Lawyers North America 2019 Awards ceremony on December 9th in New York City.
