Mobilising the Rule of Law in Climate Change

Hausfeld, the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL) and the University of Glasgow School of Law co-hosted a live and virtual COP26 event ‘Mobilising the Rule of Law in Climate Change’, featuring a keynote address by Mary Robinson and climate activist Vanessa Nakate, and panel discussions focusing on the role of courts, legislators and private market participants in addressing the climate crisis.

The event built on the discussions which took place in July at a ground-breaking global summit entitled 'Our Future in the Balance: The Role of Courts and Tribunals in Meeting the Climate Crisis’, which resulted in a landmark 'Declaration' outlining the role of the law and judiciary in tackling climate change.

'Mobilising the Rule of Law in Climate Change' brought together high-profile thought leaders with professional, academic and regulatory backgrounds. Speakers included:

  • Ingrid Gubbay, European Head of Human Rights and Environmental Law at Hausfeld
  • David R. Boyd, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment
  • Michael Gerrard, Andrew Sabin Professor of Professional Practice and Director of the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia Law School
  • Christina Voigt, Professor of Law at the University of Oslo, Chair of the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL), Co-chair of the Paris Agreement´s Compliance and Implementation Committee
  • Ida Levine, Impact Investing Institute
  • Tom Riesenberg, Senior Regulatory Advisor to Ceres, Inc.
  • Birsha Ohdedar, Lecturer in Law, School of Law & Human Rights Centre, University of Essex
  • Luke Fletcher, Partner, Bates Wells

The event ran in a hybrid format and took place at the University of Glasgow.
