Hausfeld LLP named 'International Human Rights Law Firm of the Year in Washington, D.C.' by the Global Law Experts

Hausfeld LLP is proud to announce that the firm has been selected by the Global Law Experts as the 2019 International Human Rights Law Firm of the Year in Washington D.C.

Combining experience in litigating complex cases with a passion for upholding human rights, Hausfeld lawyers have successfully represented victims of human rights abuses in the United States and around the world since Hausfeld’s inception 10 years ago. The firm is particularly proud of our recent victory on behalf of South African gold miners suffering from occupational lung disease in Johannesburg, South Africa – a case first filed in August 2012 by our South African colleague Charles Abrahams, and spearheaded by our Washington, D.C.-based partner Richard Lewis. In 2018, a landmark settlement was reached in the case. The settlement calls for the compensation of all eligible gold miners who suffered from silicosis or tuberculosis, and sets up a trust to provide medical examinations of miners and compensation payments. The court is considering the settlement for approval, and will hold an approval hearing later this year.

Richard Lewis, who led the efforts in this case commented, “This was a victory for public health and for using the law to gain a measure of justice for large numbers of South African miners.”

The Global Law Experts annual awards celebrate excellence, innovation and performance across the legal communities from around the world. The awards are broken down first by region and then into wider categories, ensuring that firms are recognized on merit not size.
